Abstract
As some European countries had strong influence and connections in southeast Asia, trade in turtles species from this region for the international pet trade has occurred for decades. Cuora amboinensis has been exported to European countries, and in particular the Netherlands, in large numbers. This species is very well presented in European zoos and in private collections as well. During the eighties and nineties reasonable numbers of other Cuora species had been exported from other south east Asian countries and China. Cuora species such as C. aurocapitata, C. pani, C. zhoui, C. galbinifrons and C. trifasciata are mainly kept and bred by private individuals. For the last few years, European zoos have been focusing on some of these species as well. The latter three species have also kept by zoos since the EAZA Shell shock campaign began. The zoos of Rotterdam, Chester, London, Jersey and Munster play a leading role. An overview will be given on the status of all Cuora species in Europe in zoos and private collections. Numbers and breeding results will be discussed. A short husbandry and reproduction presentation of Cuora trifasciata at the Rotterdam Zoo and of Cuora zhoui at the Munster Zoo will be given.
