Abstract
This presentation provides an overview of all the ATP projects, student training and ranger training that we have worked on this year. One major project focused on Bourret’s Box Turtle. Cuora bourreti was previously a sub species of Cuora galbinifrons which has now received full species status. The species is endemic to central Vietnam and currently considered critically endangered (IUCN 2006). Although very little is known about the species, a high economic value is sustaining hunting and collection pressure on the species, which suffered large scale illegal collection at the peak of the Asian Turtle Crisis in the 1980’s and 1990’s. This survey was the first undertaken for the species to assess the potential for a localised species focused conservation initiative at Song Thanh Nature Reserve in central Vietnam, with the prospect of replicating the model for Cuora picturata and Cuora galbinifrons. Interviews were conducted in communities bordering the nature reserve to determine local values for the species, abundance, hunting techniques and seasons. Additional field surveys were conducted to try and confirm the species in the wild using a variety of survey techniques. Findings from the initial survey indicate that Cuora bourreti continues to occur in the area, although numbers have been greatly reduced. Moreover, Song Thanh Nature Reserve was identified as a regionally important site for turtle conservation with seven turtle species, including one critically endangered species, Cuora bourreti, and four endangered species Cuora mouhotii, Platysternon megacephalum, Sacalia quadriocellata and Palea steindachneri. Another major project focused on the Three Keeled Box Turtle, Cuora mouhotii, which is a secretive species, despite being distributed throughout much of southeast Asia, is considered endangered, largely due to collection for use as food and traditional medicine. This radio telemetry study was the first in-situ research undertaken on the species. Seasonal activity patterns and home range were investigated in relation to environmental conditions. Initial findings indicate a small home range for the species and long periods of inactivity during the cold dry season. Additionally a number of animals that had been maintained in captivity were released as part of the first monitored release program of turtles in Vietnam, aimed at determine the survival of the species and investigating release as an option for confiscated animals. Interviews in local communities, available trade data for the species, and the encounter of wild animals was also used to investigate collection and trade of the species. Result indicated that, although large animals are primarily caught to be traded, small juvenile Cuora mouhotii are also collected but kept at the local level in attempts to ‘farm’ the species or to keep as pets.
