Abstract
Testudinidae Testudo hermanni Here are reported the results of a study on Testudo hermanni population in the Natural Reserve of Bosco Nordio (Chioggia, Venice). 57 specimens were captured that we supposed to belong to a total population of about one hundred specimens as obtained by statistical models applied to the capture-recapture data (excluding animals less than one year old). This population shows a high percentage of animals under 10 years old and a male-biased sex ratio overbalance. Turtles were mainly found on paths and clearings, in the cod. 2130 habitat (Dir. 92/43/CEE: Fixed coastal dunes with herbaceous vegetation ("grey dunes")) and in the ecotonal zones between it and cod. 9340 habitat (Quercus ilex and Quercus rotundifolia forests). Morphometry carried out on the collected specimens confirms the results of previous genetic analysis which demonstrated an at least partial allochthonous origin of this population.
