Abstract
Background Consumption of turtles by natives and settlers in Amazon and Orinoco has been widely studied by science. The regional conflict between consumption, traditional fishing, conservation programs, federal law and its implementation, contrasts with customs and needs of peoples. This study was conducted in the Purus River, known for the consumption and illegal trade of turtles. The objective of this study was to quantify illegal trade of turtles in Tapaua and understand their reflection on local. Methods This study was conducted in the municipality of Tapaua, The state of Amazonas, Brazil. To estimate turtle consumption, interviews were conducted for 2 consecutive years (2006 and 2007) in urban areas and isolate communities. The experimental design was randomized with respect to households. To study the turtle fishery and trade chain we used a methodology described as "snowball". Results In Purus River, the data show that 100% of respondents in the two years of monitoring reported consuming at least three species of turtles (Podocnemis spp.) that occurs in the floodplain of Purus. Our estimates clearly demonstrate that about 34 tons of animals are consumed annually in a Tapaua the margins of a major fishing rivers of the Amazon. However, it is unclear what the impact of this activity is on natural turtle populations. Apparently the capture and trade of turtles in Tapaua generate income for fishermen, but due to its illegality it is not included in official statistics, especially in tax collection. At least five components on chain of commercialization turtles in Purus River are identified. Conclusions Our results are estimative conservators of real impact of the consumption and for this reason advocate the management as one action to contribute for conservation of populations turtles in these region. It is clear that the Brazilian government should break the paradigms adopted currently in your politic of natural conservation of resource and urgently initiate a new management program that includes users in decision making and indeed contribute to the management and conservation of freshwater turtles in Brazil, in particular on Brazilian Amazon.
