Reptiles nowadays are kept as pets and, among those, chelonians are the most commonly found. Because of the owner’s lack of knowledge, diseases may occur, mainly due to poor husbandry. In some cases, surgery may be necessary. There are different approaches to the coelomic cavity that can be used, being chosen depending on the affected organ, the surgeon’s ability, and the equipments that are available. This monograph addresses a literature review about surgically relevant anatomic and physiologic characteristics of chelonians, as well as more commonly executed surgical accesses to their coelomic cavity.
