Abstract
The distribution and space use of a local Emys orbicularis population was studied between 1997 and 2001 in and near the herpetological reserve Kuculishkes, southwest Lithuania (54◦40 N, 23◦90 E). The population is confined to two pond complexes. No continuous exchange of individuals takes place between both. Each pond complex consists of a perennial pond, used all over the year and several smaller, mainly temporary water bodies, which are used mostly during summer. In winter, turtles concentrate in small areas of the perennial ponds, while in spring and summer they occupy all water bodies. Turtles stay in the smaller water bodies for one day up to two months. The individuals have the widest spatial distribution in early summer and the smallest during winter. Shifting between the perennial ponds of the two pond complexes was observed for males, but not for females. Also juveniles changed water bodies and pond complexes. Females of the two pond complexes oviposit mainly in different nesting sites.
