Abstract |
Testudinidae We present the results for the necropsies performed in the last 10 years in the Herman's tortoise Testudo hermanni in the recovery centers of the species :CRARC (Masquefa, Barcelona) and CRT (Garriguella, Girona). We analyzed 265 autopsies for adults (36 males and 24 females), subadults (56 individuals) and hatchlings (149 animals less than two years). Results provide information about diseases causing main mortality in different age groups. These data are an important tool in the management of this species in recovery centers. In adults, stomatitis- rhinitis complex predominantly associated with the presence of herpesvirus is the major cause of mortality, followed by metabolic processes such as gout and trauma carapace. In subadults, metabolic processes were found as metaoblic bone disease, followed by digestive and infectious diseases as pneumonias as well as injuries of the carapace. In young tortoises, renal disease is the leading cause of mortality, followed by congenital problems associated with incubation and birth (teratology). In all age classes we found different species of parasites, mainly oxyuridae (Mehdiella or Tachigonetria). These parasites are occasional findings that seem less related to the leading causes of mortality, although they may help aggravating pathologic features.
