Testudinidae Dipsochelys dussumieri The relationship of bodyweight (W) to carapace length (L) was studied in wild and captive Aldabra giant tortoises. The 157 wild tortoises were free living on the island of Curieuse in the Republic of the Seychelles and the 50 captive animals were held in various zoos and private collections in the UK and the Seychelles. Statistical analysis of length and weight data was carried out. The logarithm of the carapace length was regressed on the logarithm of bodyweight; there was no significant difference in either the slope or intercept of the regression for the wild and captive groups. An equation (L=17.5 (W) 0.345) which described the length to weight ratio in this sample of tortoises was derived. It is suggested that this equation could be used to predict weight from length and be used to assess the body condition of this species.
